Whilst RC planes and helicopters have never made it to the big time, as far as hobbies go, for those people that do start the hobby, it can become something of an addiction. Being in control of your flying machine, and being able to make it perform tricks, fly fast or fly high, can be fairly exhilarating. The hobby has rapidly progressed over the last few years, and to increase the abilities of RC pilots, various tools, including many types of RC flight simulator have been released onto the market. These are often produced by the same companies that make the aircraft, but are also available from third party companies.

There are many different types of RC flying machine available, which range from the very basic electric helicopters, with a limited range of motion, to extremely complex and maneuverable machines. The basic models can be purchased for less than $100 and, with the supervision of an adult, can be a great toy for children to play with (although they are also great fun for adults). The more complex models are often powered by gas, and can fly very fast. Their controls are so complex that it is likely that a beginner would crash it; this is both dangerous and could damage the plane. Before attempting any complicated moves, it is advisable to practice with easier maneuvers and increase to more complicated moves as your skill level improves.
To aid with the learning process, many of the higher-end models come with included RC flight simulator software to be used on a home PC. However, if your particular brand of helicopter or plane did not come with inclusive software, there is a range of independent software available – simply ensure that it is compatible with your model of aircraft before you purchase it. The reasons for using RC flight simulator software is clear: because they are designed to take into account all physical laws, you can practice complicated maneuvers on screen before trying them with the real aircraft and the outcome in real life should be very similar. This makes the whole process safer and ensures there is less chance of damaging your plane and causing the need for expensive repairs.
Most types of simulator software allow the user to use their real control pad in order that the the experience is made as realistic as possible. This means that a radio receiver will need to be connected to the computer (usually by USB) before it can be used. However, using the software in his manner means that practicing will resemble real life as closely as possible. In fact, the better types of RC flight simulator software will allow the user to preset wind speed and direction and other weather conditions.
Whatever type of RC aircraft you use, it is practice that will enable you to improve at the hobby. However, for those times where, due to weather or other problems, you are unable to physically fly your plane, RC flight simulator makes for a very useful alternative.
